How long you’ve been training for: Competition Prepping: January 2013, recreational weight training: 10 years (on and off)
How did you get started in health and fitness?
I have been active my entire life through many different sports ranging from dance, netball, touch footy, and now body sculpting. I find movement through my body incredibly grounding, not just physically but also mentally and spiritually. It’s all about balance to me.
Why did you start training?
I have been active my entire life through many different sports; my body thrives on movement. I’ve weight trained sporadically the last ten years and found my body responded really well and sculpted quite easily. In 2011 I became vegan and found my body thrived on my new diet; so two years later I decided to get serious about training and see what my plant built muscle could do and so I started prepping for natural body sculpting competitions.
What does your current training split look like?
My program changes every 3-4 weeks, circuit style training – maximum intensity in sessions that last around 1-1.5 hours. I leave my training split up to my coach – Luke Tan. Since he has taken me under his wing, I’ve seen incredible results!.
What are your three favourite exercises in your workout routine?
I love working legs, shoulders and back. So any variation of deadlift or lat pull down hits the sweet spot for me. For shoulders, I enjoy the trusty military press
What is your favourite form of cardio?
HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)
How often do you do cardio?
I don’t schedule cardio into my training program, unless I’m looking to drop fat quick. Though sometimes I feel like a good sprint session so I’ll add into my training split… love to feel the blood pumping and heart racing during sprints!
What is your diet like? Do you follow a certain ‘type’ of diet?
I eat a plant-based diet, which means I’m vegan. No animal products whatsoever. I follow a whole foods plant-based diet; meaning I typically don’t consume many processed food products. I prefer to attain all my nutrients from my diet, with minimal supplementation.
What is your favourite meal?
My Green Juice every morning. Such an amazing power shot of energy to start the day!
What is your favourite ‘cheat’ food?
Raw Desserts!! They are out of this world amazing!
What supplements do you use?
Plant-based protein powder, chlorophyll, greens powder, occasionally spirulina/chlorella
What is your greatest achievement in the health and fitness industry?
Winning the 2013 INBA Bikini Novice division at the National titles
What would you most like to achieve in the fitness industry?
To obtain the most aesthetically pleasing body you have ever seen 😉
What is the biggest mistake you made when first starting out?
Not resting!! Rest days are important to aid in recovery. Don’t skip them!
What are three tips you would share with a beginner?
- Research! – Don’t just use a PT/coach because you know them or they have been recommended by a friend. Find out who they’ve coached and ask those people for personal testimonials. Look at their athletes’ body composition and ask about diet. They are a lot of PT/coaches out there damaging the health of their athletes. Please be aware.
- Body Image – How you look when you’re competing will be amazing. Please know that it isn’t sustainable all year around. A lot of women, myself included, after finishing a comp season become disheartened with our body image. Understand that during competition prepping you will be depleting your body of nutrients, after a comp season those nutrients need to be replenished. Yes you will put on a bit of weight, but it’s healthy and natural. Please don’t get stuck in a cycle where you mentally abuse yourself because you look ‘fat’ compared to your stage composition.
- Have fun! – The beauty is in the journey. Put the hard yards in at the gym and be diligent with your diet but remember to have fun. Sure it can get tough, but if you do your absolutely best, you can’t be disappointed with that. Stepping on stage is a celebration of seeing through a commitment you made to yourself. Remember to love the process ladies!
Where does your motivation come from?
I am motivated to be the best version of myself I can be. I love the feeling of strength and empowerment weight lifting provides me. I also love that I am thriving on a plant-based diet and providing an example to the world that green muscle can be strong and sexy!
Who is your favourite fitness model/inspiration?
I don’t have a ‘favourite’ fitness model. Everyone’s body is different. Seeing my body change is magical to me, knowing I have directly sculpted my body to an aesthetic I enjoy is my inspiration.
What is the impact you would like to make on the fitness industry?
I am part of a movement that is abolishing the myth that vegans are weak, frail and deficient in nutrients. It’s a blanket statement and it’s out-dated; check out my fellow plant built athletes from Evolved Generation and PlantBuilt. It’s time for a paradigm shift!
